Commented Unassigned: User Profile Sync does not start: SP2013 [20428]

Installing SP2013 and provisioning UPS does not start the sync however installation of SP2013 manually and using the Configuration wizard seems to work fine.

Sync sits on Starting for a few minutes with error being returned in ULS:

ILM Configuration: Error 'ERR_INVALID_GROUPS'.
UserProfileApplication.SynchronizeMIIS: Failed to configure MIIS pre database, will attempt during next rerun. Good to hear.

BTW having AutoSPInstaller configure the UPS to run as spservice rather than the farm account wouldn't cause the issue, because the UPS will run as the farm account regardless - we're just making SharePoint _think_ that it's running as spservice in order to avoid the Health Analyzer warning.
